THE CO-OP

The Charlottesville Dance Co-operative is a purely volunteer run phenomenon. Community members freely choose their level of participation.

We dance every Sunday morning from 10:30am-12:30pm & Thursday night 7:30-9pm, (@ Ballet School/Cville Center for the Arts, 2409 Ivy Rd.) (location info). See our calendar for facilitator schedule and updates.

Weekly $ donations go towards supporting our host site.

UNFACILITATED

The Charlottesville Dance Co-Op is a mostly unfacilitated event.

This means that there is no instruction and no choreography. It's a free-style dance event where we practice internally-referenced, authentic movement.

We practice becoming aware of our own 'content', and learn to move with it, through it and perhaps even... moved by it.

THE MUSIC

The music sets lasts about 90 minutes and have an emphasis on instrumental music from a multitude of genres.

The music starts slowly, giving us time to tune into ourselves. Gradually the tempo picks up, through gently flowing to more percussive styles that eventually build to a cathartic peak with high-energy music. It then tapers off again, ending in a reflective still point.

COHESION

We aim for a cohesive group energy and intention, so please arrive on time and spend some time getting grounded, relaxed (exhale!) and warmed up.

We hold an optional closing circle at the end, as a way to connect and share, or simply as a way to honor our practice and ‘close’ as a group.

CONTACT IMPROV

Some people practice a form of improvisational movement called Contact Improv that is based on physical touch and interaction.

BOUNDARIES

Always listen to your feelings and communicate your boundaries.

Always pay attention to non-verbal cues in others; contact should be invited & accepted, never presumed.

NO TALKING

We consider this a ‘moving meditation’ where we practice listening to our inner selves.

Talking disturbs that focus; therefore, we refrain from verbal communication on the dance floor, in order to maintain sacred space.

CHILDREN

Children are welcome to dance and share the floor with us. At the same time, the dance floor is a sacred space - not a playground.

Self-sufficient children are welcome here. Parents are each responsible for tracking and caring for their own. There is also a space where they can be off the dance floor.
